Students with disabilities often require materials and handouts in an accessible format. By considering the accessibility of materials and handouts when they are created, you can save yourself time and effort that you may otherwise spend retrofitting inaccessible materials.

If a student has sensory impairment, it is crucial that the disability coordinators are provided with enough advance access to information ensuring third party providers like CART or ASL can effectively join. If you are using videos and other materials, often these need to be captioned or put into a different format, so timing is really important. If you don’t have all your materials ready, consider how you might prepare for next time when these sorts of requests come in.

Students with disabilities must receive materials at the same time as the rest of the class—or earlier. If the materials are not in an accessible format, and sometimes even if they are, additional adjustments may still be needed.
